Our Plans

Whatever the length, distance and frequency of your trips, we offer a range of plan options to meet your needs. 

The following rates apply to all trips made with a round-trip vehicle and, under certain conditions, when you drive a FLEX vehicle (see FLEX Vehicle). Choosing a plan is mandatory. A minimum commitment of 12 months is required for any plans with a monthly membership fee. Annual fees are non-refundable.

FLEX Vehicles

Any trip made with a FLEX vehicle will automatically be billed at the lowest price between the FLEX rates or the rates for round-trip vehicles in your plan (see Our Plans). This comparison is made regardless of the length of your trip. However, a minimum of 4 hours will be charged even for shorter trips if the round-trip rates are applied. Learn more

Good to know 

• There is no minimum number of hours billed when you use a round-trip vehicle, only a minimum reservation time of 30 minutes. 

• For trips of 4 hours or more, prices are generally the same whether you use a FLEX or round-trip vehicle (except for the Workday rate which does not apply when driving FLEX).

• Open plan members can save with FLEX on trips over 4 hours (the maximum FLEX price per day is $50 for the first day, instead of $55 for a Round-trip vehicle), and any trips made on Saturday or Sunday because the additional 35¢/hour or $3.50/day does not apply to FLEX vehicles.

Other Fees

• Surcharge on displayed prices (time + km) of 15% for minivans and 10% for family vehicles (see Our fleet). The surcharge also applies on Long Distance and Workday rates.  

• Additional charge of $5 per extra day applies to all trips longer than 28 days.  

• Online reservation or modification: free; reservation or modification by phone: $1.50 per transaction from 8am to 5pm and $2.50 in the evenings.  

• Damage Protection Plan: Default $1.50 per trip ($600 Damage Fee); see other options below. 

• Family membership: $45/year or $3.75/month per additional driver, depending on the Value plan chosen. Learn more

FLEX-specific features

30 minutes free blocking time  
Once you’ve located a FLEX vehicle using our mobile app, you can block it free of charge for up to 30 minutes, giving you time to reach it. You can block the same vehicle one additional time if you do not access it within the first 30 minutes.  

20 minutes credit if you are refuelling 
A time credit of 20 minutes will be applied for any trip of an hour or less billed at the FLEX vehicle rate if it costs at least $20 (taxes included) to fill up the tank. In the case of a trip of less than 20 minutes, the maximum credit will be equivalent to the length of the trip.  

Up to 15 minutes to clear snow  
During winter, a credit of up to 15 minutes is applied to your trip for snow removal. Your billed trip time will begin when you start driving, or 15 minutes after you unlock the vehicle, whichever comes first. The snow removal credit is applied regardless of the weather. If you use more than one FLEX vehicle in a day, the credit applies to each vehicle used. If you happen to use the same vehicle again during the day, the credit will only apply once.

All monthly Damage Protection Plan options, except for the default ($600 Damage Fee for $1.50 per trip), are a minimum 12 month commitment.

You can reduce these costs by taking advantage of the protection offered by the credit card you use to pay your invoices if it includes collision loss damage insurance (cost per driver falls then to $36 per year). To take advantage of this offer, you must submit your request by completing the Damage Protection Plan Waiver.

FLEX Pass

This exceptional offer gives you a whole month of free FLEX trips of 30 minutes or less. Your trips only become billable after the 31st minute (75 km included per trip, 24¢ per km after 75 km). Another way to use Communauto FLEX vehicles! Learn more

Our Services

In Quebec, Communauto offers two distinct services: the one-way FLEX service, available only in Quebec City and Montreal, which does not require a reservation, and the round-trip reservation service, available in Quebec City, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières and Victoriaville.

Our Fleet

Choose between our different types of vehicles, depending on your needs! Our fleet is mainly made up of compact hatchbacks and mid-size sedans, for example the Toyota Prius C, Kia Rio, and Toyota Corolla. In Montreal, we also have two 100% electric models: the Nissan LEAF and the Kia Niro. We also have a more spacious model available: the Toyota Prius V, perfect for your out-of-town trips.

In Quebec, our fleet is made up of 65% hybrid vehicles, and 35% gas vehicles.

When reserving round-trip vehicles, you can use the “Options” tool in the mobile app to search for a specific vehicle category or set of accessories.

All our vehicles are non-smoking.

Baby Seats

Child seats are available in certain round-trip vehicles. To find them, select “Baby s. less than 18 kg”, or “Baby s. less than 30 kg” (do not select both at the same time) in the “Options” menu under vehicle search tool on the mobile app.

Parking

Freedom from parking hassles is one of the big advantages of carsharing. There’s no need to pay for monthly parking, and it’s one more way that carsharing saves you money!

Round-trip vehicle parking

All of our round-trip vehicles have reserved parking spaces which will be waiting for you at the end of each trip.

Our vehicle stations are located, for the most part, in private or public lots. At most stations, there is a specific parking spot reserved for us, while in some, it is possible to park anywhere onsite.

FLEX parking

In Quebec City and Montreal, FLEX vehicles can be released within the FLEX Zone where “Excepté véhicules munis d’un permis” signs are displayed, provided there are no additional parking restrictions in place.

Be sure to check all parking signs before you release the vehicle.
Keep in mind that you are not allowed to release a vehicle in a zone with temporary parking restrictions, even if parking is permitted at the time of your return.
FLEX cars can also be released on other streets where there are no restrictions within the FLEX Zone as well as in “FLEX Drop-off Points”.

Gas

The cost of gas is always included in our rates.

For your convenience, credit cards are provided in vehicles for refuelling. For instructions on how to use the cards, see “Fuelling, collisions, and other trip-related questions” in the FAQ.

We ask that you return the vehicles with at least a quarter tank of gas. This is a rule of courtesy toward other members.

Insurance

Communauto vehicles are covered by insurance, including collision and third-party liability. You can drive with peace of mind! When you apply, all you have to do is choose a Damage Protection Plan option which will determine the maximum damage fee you will have to pay in the event of collision or damage to a vehicle, namely: $ 0, $300, or $600 per event (responsible or not). Learn more >

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to join, you must:

• Be at least 19 years of age (unless joining under a family membership)
• Have a valid and unexpired Class 5 or 5 Probationary license
• Have a relatively clean driving record
• Have a good credit record

Within a minimum of the last three years, you must:

• Have no major or criminal driving convictions
• Have no violations relating to impaired driving

You can order your driving record and claims history online, in person, or by mail, from the SAAQ and the Groupement des assureurs automobiles at no cost. See order my driving records.

You have one month, following your registration, to provide us with these two documents.

Please allow two business days for us to process your application.

As soon as you receive the email confirming approval of your application, you can start using the service without delay.

How can you offset?

For our members, it is possible to join the GHG compensation program from your online account. Just go to the “Personal Information” option and check the box under the “Offsetting your emissions” section.

How much does it cost?

GHG compensation is calculated per kilometer driven, depending on the type of vehicle. At Communauto, we offer three different rates, corresponding to the three types of vehicles present in our fleet (see image above). The costs related to GHG offsetting are simply added to your bill.

Why?

“In 2017, the transportation sector was the second largest source of GHG emissions [in Canada], accounting for 24% (174 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) of total national emissions. Between 1990 and 2017, GHG emissions from the transportation sector grew by 43%. […] Changes in the mix of vehicle type used, such as the increasing preference of passenger vehicle owners for light trucks rather than more fuel-efficient passenger cars, played an important role in shaping the evolution of GHG emissions.“¹

The projects

The voluntary compensatory credits will be distributed from a portfolio of projects called “Planetair + Quebec (ecosystem)”. Through this portfolio, 100% of emissions are offset by carbon credits from international renewable energy and energy efficiency projects and, in addition to offsetting, Planetair gives 20% per ton offset to Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCN). This contribution supports projects to protect and restore sensitive natural habitats in Canada that promote adaptation to climate change.

Planetair has created various international alliances with the best providers of high-quality Gold Standard certified carbon credits from renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in developing countries. The Gold Standard is the strictest standard on the carbon market, requiring the transparency of the process and the verifiable and measurable reduction of GHG emissions.
